Semiotics was the subject of Umberto Eco, the author of The Name of the Rose (1980 – published in English in 1983, and filmed in 1986 starring Sean Connery, F. Murray Abraham and a young Christian Slater). In 1971 Eco became the first Professor of Semiotics at the University of Bologna (Europe's oldest university, founded in 1088). He died in 2016, aged 84.
